Today’s cellphones have everything we could possibly need. With the new “smartphones” having endless applications, we can do pretty much anything. From counting calories, to playing games, these phones do it all. To almost all of your questions and boredom, as Apple would say, “There’s an app for that.”
In 1992, IBM created the first smartphone, called Simon. What made it a smartphone, rather than an ordinary cellphone, was that it could not only call, but also had a calendar, phone book, clock, games, e-mail, and more. It was similar to today’s smartphones in that it was also a touchscreen. Since 1992, many improved smartphones have been made, leading us to today’s smartphone with these endless apps. Apps are simple and quick to download. They have provided entertainment, help, organization, and information to people everywhere.
Time magazine recently created a list of the “50 Best iPhone Apps 2011”. For games, Angry Birds was listed as one of the most popular. For information, sites such as Wikipedia, Google Earth, and Weather Channel were popular apps. Entertainment included music sites such as Pandora, movie sites such as Netflix, and social sites such as Facebook. All of these apps allow people to have all of their information in one place, their phone. With all of these apps allowing people to do what they would normally do on a computer, it almost makes them seem unnecessary. Along with becoming an important part of our everyday life, cellphones are affecting our use of other technology as well. While computers may seem easier to use for now, there is no predicting what the next version of smartphones may look like, or how they might further change our use of other technology.
